Jan. 10th, 2006 05:34 pmPrince Zuko was at one time a basically good natured young man. He was raised to be a lord of his people, the fourth in the line since his Nation declared war on the rest of the world in the absence of it's reincarnating protector, the Avatar -- a master of all four elemental bending techniques. Zuko himself was unlike the generations before him, and perhaps could be called 'soft' -- making a fatal mistake in questioning the military's war policies within his father's war room, he was forced to duel for his honor.
He thought he was going to duel a general -- the one he had insulted and questioned. Instead, his father came into the dueling field, and burned him when he could not rise to fight against the man who had sired him. He had taken Zuko's words as a personal slight -- since they were in his war room, against his general, against his war itself. When Zuko could fight, his father told him he was weak, and that he had to learn to be strong -- and that anguish and suffering would be his teachers as he seared the boy's face, nearly taking his left eye completely and ruining his ear.
He was only fourteen.
Sent into exile with the seemingly impossible task of finding the Avatar, rumored to be in hiding, he spent two years searching, miserable and angry, with a new scar over his left eye and his outlook bitterly skewed.
And then he tripped over the Avatar, who had apparently been trapped in an Iceberg all this time. (Whoops!) And the chase began...
He obviously never caught him; he made enemies, was nearly assassinated and killed, and then failed to capture the Avatar the upteenth time before he finally decided that it was better to wait, rest, and regroup. OF course, he'd lost his ship, crew, and any allies he could speak of beyond his elderly uncle Iroh who was still with him.
He was last seen drifting into the arctic sea on a tiny little raft that could barely support the two people on it, hoping to escape the Northern Water Tribe... And that's when he'll make it to the Beach.
